INSTONIANS crashed to yet another heavy defeat at Rosbrien on Saturday and so face life in Division Two of the All Ireland League next season. They were never in the hunt against Old Crescent who ran out winners by 35-11 and made virtually certain of their premier division status next season.
Old Crescent took control of the game in the opening half after which they led 18-6 and never allowed Instonians back into the picture subsequently.
Stephen Tuohy kicked an early penalty for Crescent, but had to leave the field almost immediately because of injury. Even the loss of such an influential player did not upset Crescent who went on to score first half tries through John Forde and David Bowles. Barry O'Neill kicked a penalty and Sean Madigan converted one of the tries with Simon Bond repaying with two penalties for Instonians.
The second half continued as the first had concluded with a second try for Bowles. Kenton Hillman hit back with an Instonians try to make it 23-11; but Crescent finished much the stronger and tries by Anthony O'Dwyer and replacement John Noonan left them decisive winners.
