NUIG 1-8 Galway 0-9:JOHN MAUGHAN'S NUIG claimed their second intercounty scalp of the week when a goal from substitute Ian Galvin proved decisive in this FBD League clash at Tuam Stadium yeserday.
The students, who will host the Sigerson Cup next month in Galway, opened up a lead of 0-5 to 0-1 after 20 minutes with Mayo’s Neil Douglas hitting three of them and Shane Moran from Leitrim also getting a brace.
An experimental Galway side, who hit the front with a point after 14 seconds from Mark Hehir, did not score again until four minutes from the interval when another of last year’s All-Ireland Under-21 side Michael Boyle found the range. They finished the half strongly with Conor Rabbitte and Hehir hitting points to leave Galway trailing by 0-5 to 0-4.
Galway hit the front after the restart with Michael Martin and Niall Coleman but the students rose to the task into the wind. Kevin Conlon and Douglas hit points before substitute Ian Galvin hit the decisive score after 43 minutes when he blasted home a goal.
Galway never recovered from that blow. Cormac Bane cut the deficit to a goal with a point but they could not recover.
