In a game which was played at a frantic pace in the early stages, neither set of defenders was prepared to yield - at least until the 37th minute when Kieran Foley broke the ball down from a corner and it fell to the feet of Shane O'Loughlin, who gave NUIG the advantage.
Five minutes into the second half, there was more trouble for UUC when they had central defender, Liam Kane, sent off for a second bookable offence. Yet they managed to send in some testing shots at Galway keeper, Phil King, while at the other end Brendan and Richie Dunne were prominent. The vital goal came after 67 minutes when Brendan Meehan won possession and Alan O'Donnell beat the off-side trap and goalkeeper Ronan Rooney.
