Bosco McDermott and his team-mates on Galway's J B Carr Diamond Trophy team failed to reach the heights their fellow countymen did at Croke Park on Sunday when they lost out to Fermoy 4-1 in an exciting final at the beautiful Woodenbridge club.
McDermott, a member of the famous Galway three-in-a-row winning team of the 1960s, who missed the Croke Park epic to play in the final, and his partner Frank Sullivan, halved their match with John Carey and Joe Murphy. However, the strong Fermoy side took three of the other four games to capture the trophy for the first time.
Michael Murphy and Paddy Barry gave Fermoy the perfect start with a 3 and 2 win over Brendan Ward and Dan Byrne; Dick Murphy and Bill Carey halved with John Ryan and Dermot Dooley; Jim Bartley and Con Cooney, who was also a member of the winning Holmpatrick Trophy team at Ceann Sibeal, were 2 and 1 winners over Tom Forde and Denis McSweeney. Tom O'Connor and Michael Horgan beat another Tom O'Connor and Brendan Dowling 3 and 2.
