Night shot and Light The Rocket are the pair to look out for today when the British programme puts the emphasis firmly on speed. Both promising sprinters can begin to make their presence felt in good company by landing a first win in listed class.

Night Shot's opportunity comes first, in Lingfield's Courage Best Leisure Stakes, in which listed winner Bold Fact is the likely favourite, having run well for a long way on his reappearance at Newmarket last month.

But he has to carry a 4lb penalty and has a slight wayward streak, which makes him one never to place too much faith in.

Night Shot is definitely up to winning in this class. He ran numerous good races under progressively stiffer weights in handicaps, culminating in a fine effort to defy 10st at Doncaster in March.

And he did extremely well when fourth to Sampower Star in last week's Duke Of York Stakes at York, particularly as the soft going made that race too stiff a test of stamina for him.

Light The Rocket might have been a big obstacle to success today as this Pattern-race performer in the making was among the initial entries for the £20,000-added contest.

But he has been switched by Richard Hannon to the equally valuable Ring & Brymer Achilles Stakes on Kempton's evening card and should continue his trainer's excellent recent run of form.

The three-year-old has run blinders to finish second under welter burdens in two good handicaps this season, failing by only a length and a quarter to give Cubism 14lb at Salisbury last time. Things are different tonight as the weights are very much in his favour, for he escapes a penalty as he has never won in listed company. An omission he is set to rectify.

Back at Lingfield, the day's sixfurlong Ruinart Champagne Handicap is yet another test of speed. Most likely to pass the test is Zeppo, who showed plenty of dash when third over five furlongs here a fortnight ago yet stays this longer trip well.

Connections are still looking for a jockey for Victor Chandler Chester Vase first-past-the-post Housemaster in next month's Vodafone Derby.

The colt's owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing are trying to secure the talents of either former French champion Olivier Peslier or big-race specialist Michael Kinane.

"We are still waiting confirmation from Mr Peslier and Mr Kinane," trainer Michael Bell said yesterday.

Peslier may well be required by Andre Fabre to ride Val Royal, who advertised his credentials with a comfortable victory in a Group Three contest at Longchamp on Thursday.

Kinane who rides for the powerful Aidan O'Brien stable, is also on Godolphin's shortlist as a possible partner for Adair.

Whoever gets the ride on Housemaster can expect a bold showing from the son of Rudimentary.

Bell added: "Housemaster is very well - in very, very good order."
