Liverpool may leave its Anfield ground for a bigger site, it emerged last night. The historic ground, which has seen Liverpool win the league 18 times, is one of the smallest in the Premiership and has a capacity of 44,000. Anfield is surrounded by rows of tightly-packed terraced streets and parking for matches has been seen as a growing problem. It is believed the proposed new site would cater for 70,000 supporters, making it the biggest in England. A spokesman for Liverpool FC would not formally confirm the move, but said expansion was an "absolute necessity" if it was to continue to compete in the top flight.
National League champions Shelbourne have confirmed a pre-season friendly with Premiership champions Manchester United for Tolka Park on Thursday, August 10th. The game has been arranged through the strategic alliance between the clubs at schoolboy level. Details on tickets will be announced shortly. Sheffield Wednesday confirmed Paul Jewell's quick switch from Yorkshire neighbours Bradford yesterday morning. Wednesday chairman Howard Culley confirmed that Jewell, who resigned from his managerial position at Valley Parade at the weekend, has agreed a three-year deal.
