TWO late points from wing forward Kieran McDonald earned Mayo a 0-8 to 0-6 win over Wexford at Gorey yesterday and gave the westerners their fifth win on the trot in Division Three of the National Football League.
Liam McHale, fresh from his basketball exploits of the previous night, and David Brady dominated the midfield exchanges and guided the visitors to a 0-6 to 0-2 lead at half-time.
The home side showed more urgency in the second half and three points from wing forward Collie McBride and another from Scott Doran had them back on level terms.
However, McDonald, who accounted for all but two points of his team's total, sprang to his side's rescue in the closing minute with two fine points to give them a deserved victory.
Monaghan, who lost to Mayo last time out, got their drive for promotion back on course with a comfortable 1-13 to 0-8 win over a lethargic Galway, who had to wait until the 21st minute for their first score, at Clones.
Monaghan dominated from the outset and raced into an early lead with three points from Declan Smyth and another from Declan Mone.
When corner forward Smyth scored the game's only goal after only 11 minutes the Ulster side were firmly in the driving seat and they went in leading by 1-7 to 0-3 at half-time. Smyth ran the Galway defence ragged throughout and finished with a personal tally of 1-7.
Galway's John Concannon had his goalbound shot tipped over the bar in the closing stages and it was Monaghan who finished the stronger, adding two more points in injury time.
Roscommon, meanwhile, kept their promotion hopes alive, an emphatic 3-15 to 0-9 win over a very poor Antrim side at Hyde Park moving them into third place in the table. Roscommon were allowed far too much space in attack and could have at least doubled their goal tally.
First-half goals by Nigel Dineen and Gerry Cregg helped Roscommon to a commanding 2-7 to 0-3 lead at half-time. There was no way back for Antrim after Dineen fisted home his second goal nine minutes into the second half and he ended with a personal total of 2-5.
Fermanagh came from behind to snatch a three-point win over Sligo at Markievciz Park in a game which saw four players sent off by Offaly referee Noel Cooney.
Shortly after Sligo midfielder Eamonn O'Hara was sent off, Raymond Gallagher took advantage of uncertainty in the Sligo defence to score the decisive goal nine minutes from time.
The drama continued in the 55th minute when three players, Padraic Doohan of Sligo and the Fermanagh pair of Justin Gilheaney and Raymond Curran, were sent off following a midfield flare-up involving several players.
However, Fermanagh refused to panic in the closing stages and a late point by the impressive Shane King put the issue beyond all doubt.
