JONAH LOMU has pulled out of all competition for at least six months to have drug treatment for a serious kidney disorder.
The problem was first diagnosed two years ago as a mild abnormality. However, monitoring of the condition has shown moderate deterioration over the past three months.
Kidney specialists have advised the New Zealand wing that the treatment, which means he would not pass random drug tests, is essential and he is start shortly and continue for six months.
No further details of the illness were disclosed, although doctors have given him a 50 per cent chance of full recovery. "I feel very positive about the treatment," Lomu said. "I've got the best doctors on the case and I never lie down and let anything trample over me. This is just a hiccup."
New Zealand team coach John Hart said: "The hearts of the All Black management go out to Jonah he's had a tough year."
