CORK City clinched a place in the InterToto Cup in the most dramatic fashion before their delighted fans at Turners Cross yesterday.
There were seconds left when Cork midfielder, Colin O Brien, rescued what seemed an impossible position when he headed a cross from Dave Hill powerfully to the net.
The goal sparked off scenes of celebration on the terraces followed immediately by shouts of relief as Cork gained the point that ensured European competition for them. They will now Ia in a division along with teams from Germany, Belgium, Israel and Switzerland.
Yet as late as the 80th minute Cork seemed to have blown their chance when they conceded a penalty goal to a lack lustre Rovers. Tony Cousins scored from the spot after Declan Daly had been penalised for handball and the remaining minutes were hectic Cork frantically sought an equaliser.
Cork were on top throughout the game but failed to take advantage of their scoring chances until O Brien proved their saviour. It is the best moment of my career," he said immediately afterwards: "We fully deserved it and I am delighted for everybody involved."
