BASKETBALL WEEKEND ROUND-UP:KILLESTER INFLICTED more woe on Bord Gáis Neptune as the Cork side failed to exact a measure of revenge following last year's League final defeat.

Killester coach Darren O’Neill was pleased with his side’s 68-64 win. “It is always great to win in Neptune. Both teams were unbeaten going into the game so it was important that we had a strong performance,” said O’Neill.

“We are missing key players from last season; however, confidence is high and we are building momentum.”

UCC Demons secured a much-needed win as they recorded a convincing 72-58 win away to UL Eagles on Saturday night.

An impressive performance from American Shawn Atupem, who scored 30 points, helped the Cork club clinch a deserved win.

UCD just had enough to see off unlucky Moycullen as they defeated the Galway team by just two points, 67-65.

DCU Saints showed their strength in depth as they retained their unbeaten run with an 84-61 win away to Belfast Star on Saturday night. Mike Trimmer, Eoin Darling and Pat Glover came off the bench midway through the third quarter to ensure the Dublin side kept their momentum.

In the Nivea Women’s Superleague, UL maintained their excellent run with victories over Killester (68-60) and Brunell (84-61) respectively.

UL head coach James Weldon reflected on the team’s success following yesterday’s emphatic win over league newcomers Brunell.

“We were disappointed to give away 60 points at home to Killester,” said Weldon. “However, the girls had an excellent performance on the road to Brunell.

“It is important to keep this momentum going as we face an impressive Glanmire side in two weeks.”

Killester suffered a double blow over the weekend as Waterford Wildcats clinched the points thanks to a 72-59 success. Team Montenotte Hotel Cork proved too strong for Dublin rivals DCU Mercy, 73-49, while Ulster Rockets and Meteors saw off Liffey Celtics and Oblate Dynamos respectively.
