Darren Anderton had put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot after Stephen Carr was brought down by Newcastle full back Warren Barton. Both teams pushed for a winner in the later stages but neither came close. The clubs meet again in the FA Cup semi-final at Old Trafford on Sunday.
