GROUP A: Juventus ended a run of five games without a win when Giorgio Chiellini’s header sealed a 1-0 victory over Maccabi Haifa in Turin.

The Italy centre back nodded in Diego’s free kick from close range just after the break to give the hosts five points from their opening three games.

Maccabi, bottom of the group on no points, had substitute Tiago Dutra sent off midway through the second half after a studs-up tackle on Chiellini.

The Israeli champions, strangely, had their best spell after the dismissal with Vladimer Dvalishvili among those to test Gianluigi Buffon, but Juve, who have struggled in Serie A for the last month, just hung on.

Maccabi striker Dvalishvili had also missed a good early chance in the pouring Turin rain when his diving header was expertly palmed away by a full-stretch Buffon.

Juve then increased the tempo but failed to create many clearcut opportunities. Mauro Camoranesi hit the post late on for the home side.

Defender Michael Ciani turned from villain to hero in Girondins Bordeaux’s 2-1 home win over Bayern Munich.

Ciani put the visitors in front by kicking the ball into his own net from a corner on six minutes, but made amends on the half-hour with a superb goal, scoring with his right heel with his back to the goal.

Bayern had playmaker Thomas Mueller sent off for a second booking, and five minutes from the break defender Marc Planus scored the winner for Bordeaux from close range.

Bordeaux then missed two penalties and Bayern had another player sent off in defender Daniel Van Buyten.

The win put the French champions top of Group A with seven points from three matches.
