IRELAND'S Margaret Johnston, the defending champion, beat Australia's Willow Fong 25-17 to finish fifth in the Women's World Bowls singles at Leamington Spa yesterday.
Johnston lost her world title when she went down 17-25 to Scotland's Joyce Lindores in her final league game on Saturday. England's Wendy Line won the League by a very tight margin, edging out Lindores by .016 of a shot on shots aggregate, in a dramatic finish.
But there was a shock for Line yesterday when she was demolished 9-25 by a Pacific Islander, Carmen Anderson, in the final.
Anderson became her country's first ever world champion in any sport.
Ireland finished seventh out of 31 nations in the world team championship - their highlight being the achievement of Johnston and Blackrock's Phillis Nolan in winning the world pairs title for a record breaking third successive time.
