SWIMMING:A 13-strong Irish swimming team will begin competition today at the European Junior Championships in Antwerp, Belgium which run until July 8th.

Speaking before the event Swim Ireland high performance director Peter Banks said: “We are hopeful for a number of top-16 and top-eight performances over the five days.”

The team is: Jane Roberts (Kilkenny SC), Sarah Kelly (Comans SC), Clodagh Flood (Tallaght SC), Conor Turner (Aer Lingus SC), Brendan Hyland (Tallaght SC), Brendan Gibbons (Athlone SC), David O’Sullivan (Galway SC), Curtis Coulter (Ards SC), Brian O’Sullivan (NAC SC), Brian O’Sullivan (Leander SC), Seán O’Brien (Aer Lingus SC), Cian Duffy(Galway SC) and David Prendergast (Kilkenny SC).

First into action today are Coulter, Hyland, and O’Sullivan in the 50 metres butterfly; Gibbons and Turner in the 400m freestyle; Flood and Kelly in the 200m butterfly; Duffy, O’Sullivan and Prendergast in the 100m backstroke; Roberts in the 200m backstroke and finally the men’s 4x100 metres freestyle team.
