Republic Of Ireland goalkeeping coach Packie Bonner proved he was no mean golfer recently at Galway Bay.
Bonner was in the west with Irish senior international manager Mick McCarthy and had one of those rare feats, a hole-in-one, during their friendly round of golf.
The former Celtic and Ireland colleagues had been in Galway for the Galway United fundraiser, which had to be cancelled because of the foot-and mouth fears, so they headed to Galway Bay for a round of golf instead.
Bonner certainly had reason to remember his trip as he aced the par three fourth, holing his nine-iron tee-shot at the index 16 hole which measures 136 metres. And to make it an even more memorable occasion for Bonner, his ace helped him take the money off McCarthy.
Bonner is believed to be only the second person to have had a hole-in-one at the short fourth. Joe Donoghue shot the first ace four years ago.
Meanwhile, Galway Bay had their Captains' Drive-in last Sunday when Padraig Moran and Ann Loughnane took office for the coming 12 months.
The first scratch cup of the season on the Leinster calendar has become a casualty of the foot-and-mouth disease. The Island Junior Scratch Cup scheduled for Easter Monday at the north Dublin venue has been cancelled.
