Galvin to lead KerryFinuge's Paul Galvin was officially installed as Kerry captain at a gala presentation banquet in Killarney on Saturday night, when medals won by all Kerry teams this year were handed out.

The captaincy completes a magnificent year for Galvin. He helped Kerry to win back-to-back All-Ireland senior titles but also completed a rare county double, winning the senior hurling championship with Lixnaw and the football title with Feale Rangers. This latter win enabled him to assume the Kerry captaincy and he will now try to emulate two Feale Rangers greats who captained Kerry winning sides, Jimmy Deenihan and the late Tim Kennelly.

Galvin's team-mate Darragh Ó Sé will this Friday night be named Munster Footballer of the Year while Ardfert from Kerry will be named Club of the Year after their feat of putting All-Ireland junior and intermediate titles back-to-back.

Meanwhile, Dara Ó Cinnéide brought the curtain down on a glittering football career when his crucial 28th-minute goal helped An Ghaeltacht win their first county league title thanks to a 1-3 to 0-5 victory over Kerins O'Rahillys yesterday.

In a game played in atrocious conditions, a disputed late point from Rob MacGearailt secured victory for An Ghaeltacht. An Ghaeltacht had Darragh Ó Sé sent off in the 46th minute for a second yellow card.

Ó Cinnéide (33) won numerous West Kerry championships, two county championships and one Munster club title with An Ghaeltacht and he also captained Kerry to All-Ireland victory in 2004.

Foxrock claim title

Foxrock/Cabinteely defeated West Clare Gaels 1-11 to 0-7 to claim the VHI Healthcare All-Ireland women's junior club championship in Toomevara yesterday.

A goal with 10 minutes remaining from Sinéad Murphy sealed the win for the Dublin side, who are only in their seventh year in existence. They dominated most of the game and led 0-8 to 0-3 at half-time.

The win concluded a great few days for Foxrock skipper Marla Condon, who also captained the Underdogs last week. It also completed a great win for the club who recently won their first Dublin minor crown.

SCORERS: Foxrock/Cabinteely: A Ring 0-5 (three frees), C Murphy 0-4, S Murphy 1-0, AM Murphy 0-1, L Stafford 0-1; West Clare Gaels: M Kelly 0-3, M Griffin 0-2 (one free), D Geaney 0-1, N Lardner 0-1.

McGuigan on mend

Brian McGuigan has returned to light training having been absent from the Tyrone side for the past two seasons as a result of a catalogue of injuries, including a broken leg followed by a serious eye injury.

On the prospect of the Ardboe man returning in time for the Ulster championship Tyrone manager Mickey Harte said: "the vibes are positive at the minute that that's a possibility."
