SCOTTISH CUP SEMI-FINALS:FALKIRK MANAGER John Hughes will ask the father of deceased former youth player Craig Gowans to lead the team out in the Scottish Cup final against Rangers next month.
Gowans was 17 in July 2005 when he was electrocuted at the club’s old training ground when a pole for nets he was carrying touched power lines and the tragic accident has haunted manager John Hughes since.
Two of Gowans’s former youth team-mates, Thomas Scobbie and Scott Arfield, fired Falkirk past Scottish First Division side Dunfermline at Hampden and into their first Scottish Cup final since 1997.
Scobbie’s first goal of the season and Arfield’s late penalty clinched the May 30th date with Rangers and manager John Hughes made special mention of Gowans after that game.
Arfield then confirmed the gesture which will be made to John Gowans.
He said: “The gaffer was saying to us at training that he owes the family a lot and what he wanted to do was for Craig’s dad to lead us out at Hampden if we got to the final.
“We have got there and it will be a magic moment if Craig’s family want to do that.”
Meanwhile, Kenny Miller is determined to play a key part in the title run-in after helping Rangers book their place in the final.
The Scottish striker was on the scoresheet along with Andrius Velicka and Kris Boyd as the holders cruised to 3-0 win over St Mirren at Hampden on Saturday.
