BADMINTON:The Irish champion Scott Evans had one of the finest results of his career to date when he beat the top seed at the US Open in California to reach the last eight of the tournament.
The 19-year-old Dubliner, who is ranked 53 in the world, took just 29 minutes to oust Japan's Shoji Sato, the world number 13, beating him in straight sets, 21-15, 21-14. Evans next plays the Canadian Andrew Dabeka, who is seeded fifth in the event.
Chloe Magee went out in straight sets 21-9, 21-17 in 24 minutes to the eighth-seeded Kanako Yonekura of Japan.
CRICKET:A brilliant eighth-wicket stand between Ravi Bopara and Stuart Broad helped England to victory in the one-day match against India at Old Trafford last evening.
The home side had slumped to 114 for seven in pursuit of India's 212, with the tourists looking strong favourites to level the seven-match series at 2-2.
Recalled all-rounder Ajit Agarkar did the early damage for India, claiming four for 54 off nine overs, including the prize wickets of Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen and Andrew Flintoff.
But Broad and Bopara put on 99 to claim the victory.

The Army rider had steered Cashla Bay to third in Wednesday's opener and brought out the 14-year-old gelding to go to the top of the class yesterday.
Carey and Cashla Bay had the beating of 55 other starters in the accumulator, picking up maximum points and galloping through the finish in 50.15 seconds to hold off Belgium's Ludo Philippaerts by more than one-and-a-half seconds.
