WOMEN'S FOOTBALL LEINSTER FINAL Dublin 5-8 Kildare 0-12: SINÉAD AHERNE scored 3-4 as Dublin retained their TG4 Leinster Women's senior football championship title at Dr Cullen Park, Carlow, yesterday.

At half-time, Dublin led by a scoreline of 2-3 to 0-6, with Kildare playing with the breeze in that opening half.

Mary Nevin struck for Dublin’s opening goal after 14 minutes but Kildare were back level by the 23rd minute, and soon went a point clear through Aisling Jennings.

Kildare’s lost their lead in the 25th minute when midfielder Lyndsey Peat scored Dublin’s second goal.

Aherne struck her first goal of the game after a Kildare kick-out was intercepted and, while they pulled the score back to 0-9 to 3-3, that was as good as it got for the beaten finalists.

Aherne added two further goals before the finish as Dublin booked their place in the All-Ireland quarter-finals, while Kildare must regroup for the qualifiers.
