O'Byrne Cup/Dublin 0-10, Wicklow 1-5: "Confusing" was the verdict of the Wicklow and Dublin managers on the new rules after their O'Byrne Cup match saw six players sin-binned over the 70 minutes at Aughrim yesterday.
Dublin, fielding a team of under-21s, booked their place in the next round in the closing 10 minutes with points from corner-forward and free-taker Mark Vaughan, joint top-scorer Bernard Brogan in the other corner, and Brendan Phelan on the wing.
Both managers, Paddy Canning, Dublin's under-21 coach, and Hugh Kenny gave the thumbs down to the sin-bin rule though they did see merit in the pick-up off the ground.
Dublin, who now play Louth in the next round this weekend, suffered the most under the sin-bin yellow card, accounting for four of the six players who had to sit out 10-minute periods of the match.
Indeed, Dublin finished the last 10 minutes with 13 players as full-back Nicky McGrath was sent off for a second offence, while midfielder Eamon Fennell was sin-binned at the same time.
In the last minute of the first half McGrath was the first player in the game to be sin-binned under the new rules and this led to a penalty for Wicklow, which Jonathan Daniels converted for a 1-3 to 0-5 interval lead.
