Struggling English First Division side Bolton Wanderers suffered a double blow yesterday with the departure of manager Colin Todd and their star player, Dane Per Frandsen.
Todd, who took over at Wanderers in January 1996, announced his decision to leave by mutual agreement soon after first division rivals Blackburn agreed a fee for Frandsen.
The departure of Frandsen, the team's most consistent player over the last two seasons, looks to have been the final straw for Todd. Fellow First Division side Sheffield United have launched an ambitious bid to bring former Manchester City midfielder Georgi Kinkladze back to England.
The midfielder was a huge success at Maine Road before joining Dutch side Ajax. But he has failed to make an impact with the Dutch giants and United boss Adrian Heath has opened transfer talks.
Real Madrid's unsettled French international striker Nicolas Anelka will be out of action for over a week with a knee injury, the club revealed yesterday. Real's multi-million dollar signing suffered a light muscle strain in his right knee in the first half of Tuesday night's Champions League drumming of Norwegian outfit Modre. Anelka, who has failed to live up to his lavish price tag since moving to Spain from Arsenal, put in another lacklustre performance for John Toshack's side on Tuesday and even had to suffer the indignity of being substituted in the 55th minute.
