Donnelly dropped by Tyrone

TYRONE have made two changes to their team for Sunday's Ulster football championship preliminary round replay against Down at Clones. Fay Devlin has won back his defensive place after his shock omission for the drawn game, coming in at the expense of Paul Donnelly at left half back, and midfielder Jody Gormley has lost his place to Veteran Enda Kilpatrick.

Kilpatrick will be playing his first championship game in four years. The former Tyrone captain missed last Sunday's game with a rib injury. There is no place for Brian Dooher, a spectacular success when he came in as a second half substitute in the drawn game.

Down's only change is to bring in James McCartan for Peter Withnell, who was sent off in the drawn game. McCartan, who has recovered from a shoulder injury, has been slotted into the attack on the left wing.

Aidan Farrell, who, like McCartan could not be picked for last Sunday's game because of injury, was always another option for Down once Withnell had ruled himself out.

The Ulster junior hurling championship clash between Tyrone and Monaghan, originally arranged for Dungannon, will now act as a curtainraiser in Clones.

Meanwhile, the National Hurling League pacesetters Galway and relegated Laois have agreed to bring their league fixture scheduled for June forward to tomorrow evening. The match will be played in Athenry.

The game was fixed for June 1st, but Laois requested the change of date because they are due to open their Leinster championship bid against Offaly on June 8th.

Galway, already sure of a League quarter final place at least, make a couple of interesting changes, starting with a rest for goalkeeper Pat Costelloe. Richie Burke of Oranmore Maree replaces him. Liam Hodgins comes in to deputise for Tom Helebert at right corner back. Michael Healy of Castlegar takes over from Padraig Kelly at left wing back.

Cyril Farrell experiments with the attack that was so effective against Limerick at the same venue last time out. Of most interest here is the siting of Kevin Broderick in the left corner, a move that allows him to link up with Francis Forde, who switches from the right to the left wing.

Forde and Broderick were brilliant playing at right and left wing, forward against Limerick. Daragh Coen is being rested and this affords the county's talented minor of last year Rory Gantley the chance of a match, in the right corner. The extent to which Gantley and Justin Campbell hit it off down the right flank will be of much interest to manager Farrell.

Babs Keating experiments in all divisions with the Lao is team as championship time looms large.

Seamus Dooley and David Cuddy constitute a brand new midfield pairing. Ray Fogarty and John Shortall return to defence. Barry McEvoy and Noel Delaney come into the attack in place of Damian Culleton and Tomas Kenna.

The versatile Owen Coss leads the attack, with former attacker Paul Cuddy retaining his position at centre back. He was moved there against Tipperary in the league game in Rathdowney, and despite being injured that day, filled the post again against Offaly.

. Wimbledon goalkeeper Brendan Murphy, who was in the Ireland soccer squad for the recent Republic of Ireland game against Wales in Cardiff, lined out at midfield for Trim in their 0-13 to 1-7 victory over Summerhill and scored two points. Murphy won an All Ireland minor medal for Meath, playing in goal, in 1992.
