SUNDAY'S WELL were decidedly lucky to escape with victory and advance to the semi-finals of the Munster Senior Cup at Musgrave Park yesterday.

While Sunday's Well got the best try of the game 13 minutes from time through John O'Neill, to give them the lead, they had to survive a very anxious closing period as Dolphin battled bravely.

But Dolphin were left to reflect bitterly on a succession of goal-kicking chances missed by Conor Mahony, while Conor Burke had his goal-kicking boots on for the winners.

Sunday's Well looked dangerous at the start and jumped into a fourth minute lead when Burke kicked a penalty. After Mahony equalised for Dolphin, Burke responded with a second penalty but then it all started to go wrong for Sunday's Well.

Dolphin's Paul McNamara got the game's opening try after 22 minutes and Mahony kicked a penalty nine minutes later to give them a five-point advantage at the break.

Early in the second half Dolphin jumped further in front when Dave Hyland squeezed in at the corner for a brilliant try.

A shock victory looked on the cards. But Burke took hold of the match when he kicked a 47th-minute penalty and then converted a try from Greg Tuohy.

It was Burke's break in the middle of the field that allowed John O'Neill a clear run to the Dolphin line, and Burke also kicked the conversion.

A late try by scrum-half Ivan O'Gorman couldn't prevent the Irish Youths team losing an exciting clash 21-16, against Wales at the National Stadium, Cardiff, on Saturday.

Out-half Jamie Davies put Wales ahead with a penalty before retiring with an injury, but centre Matthew Watkins took over the goal-kicking duties and increased the Welsh lead with another penalty.

Two penalties by Irish fly-half Mark Maguire and another by Watkins left Wales leading 9-6 at the interval.

The first try came early in the second half when Ireland failed to control line-out possession near their own line and flanker Max Ryce pounced.

Maguire landed another penalty but Wales replied immediately when Watkins cut through on halfway and out-paced the Irish defence for a superb solo try, which he also converted.
