The death has occurred of Frankie Walsh, the former Waterford senior hurling captain and All-Ireland medal winner, aged 76. The winner of seven county titles in row with Mount Sion, he made his championship debut against Cork in 1956 and was a member of the team that won the provincial title in 1957 and who lost the All-Ireland final to Kilkenny.

Waterford lost their provincial crown in 1958 but bounced back in 1959 with Walsh, who was now captain, collecting a second Munster title following a 3-9 to 2-9 win over Cork.

He led the side to the All-Ireland title with victory over Kilkenny in a replay. He also won another Munster title in 1963 before retiring from intercounty play in 1969.
