ENGLAND’S BRIAN Davis was matching tournament leader Jim Furyk shot for shot in the final group as the Verizon Heritage neared its conclusion in South Carolina last night.

Davis had trailed American Furyk by a stroke after 54 holes at Harbour Town Golf Links at 10 under par after a third-round, five-under-par 66 with Luke Donald a further shot behind in a seven-way tie for third place.

As Davis, seeking his first PGA Tour victory, and Furyk turned for home last night, the American was at 14 under, still a shot ahead of Davis, both golfers having sunk three birdies in bogey-free front nines.

Davis was to tie for the lead, however, with a birdie at the par four 13th and then went in front when Furyk bogeyed the par three 14th. The pendulum swung back again then on the par five 15th where Davis was short in three and failed to get up and down to leave them level with three to play.

Donald, without a win since the 2006 Honda Classic, was at 12 under after 10 holes. He slipped back to 10-under, however, with three bogeys and a birdies from the 11th and it was all down to Davis and Furyk for the title.
