An outstanding line-out performance from Irish under21 number eight Leo Cullen drove Blackrock College to a deserved J P Fanagan under20 final victory over UCD at Donnybrook last night.
Both sides were laden with former schools interprovincials and internationals. UCD even boasted a quartet of the triumphant Irish under-19 team in Andy O'Brien, Damien Broughall, Shane Moore and Brian O'Driscoll. However, Cullen's domination created the platform for Blackrock's two tries in the 26th and 52nd minutes. The first ended with flanker Richard Woods rising with the ball. Full-back Dara Kavanagh's conversion gave his side a 7-0 half-time lead.
Then, after right wing David Dunne had beat off four tacklers on a surge to the line for an unconverted UCD score, Cullen worked the oracle again for his hooker Peter Smyth to claim the second try. Kavanagh converted to make it 14-5.
A Kavanagh penalty in the 59th minute gave Blackrock the scope they needed as UCD came back at them in no uncertain terms. Replacement number eight Gareth Lloyd went over unopposed in the 64th minute for centre O'Driscoll to convert. But, if UCD harboured any thought of a comeback, Kavanagh quickly put them in their place with a 69th minute penalty.
