A spectacular own goal from Robbie Best kept Limerick's remarkable revival going as they beat Monaghan United 1-0 at Hogan Park, Rathbane, yesterday to record their fourth successive win.
Central defender Best, on loan from Bohemians, gave his bemused goalkeeper Eddie van Boxtel little chance when volleying a cross from Limerick's Paddy Doyle into his own net in the 60th minute.
The sheer unpredictability of the division was further emphasised by Saturday night's results which saw leaders Galway Untied crash 3-0 at Cobh Ramblers and Kilkenny City lose at Home Farm/Everton 2-1.
Sean Francis marked his return to Cobh with two late goals to end three straight defeats for the Cork side.
Francis set up Pat Keane to head home their first on 32 minutes. The game remained tight until the 76th minute when Francis ran clear from midfield to slip the ball past Mark Cobey. He added his second and Cobh's third two minutes from time from Keane's cross.
Home Farm/Everton moved up to joint third place with a third successive win when coming from behind to beat Kilkenny City 2-1 at Whitehall.
Kilkenny's Trevor Vaughan cleverly lobbed Paul Whelan from outside the box on 35 minutes. An audacious overhead kick from central defender Damien Maher had Home Farm level two minutes before the break and Gavin Moore snatch it on 67 minutes with a header from a corner.
A 2-0 home win by Athlone Town saw them leapfrog opponents St Francis and come off the foot of the table.
