The GAA has announced the composition of its stadium executive committee. Set up by Central Council, it is intended to supervise the commercial exploitation of the Croke Park redevelopment. Senior GAA officials and figures from the world of business will take on the challenge of making the new Croke Park profitable.
The announcement comes a week after proposals for the Government's substantial grants to the FAI emerged. Although nothing formal has yet been submitted to the Government, it is expected that the GAA will seek further assistance for the work on Croke Park. Even allowing for that becoming available, the redevelopment will still incur hefty running costs.
The new committee will report to a board of directors comprising members of the GAA Management Committee. Its stated objectives are: devising a plan to develop the stadium facilities; develop and implement strategies for generating revenue and attracting customers; effective marketing and use of stadium facilities for non-match day events; to manage all franchise business relevant to the stadium; to oversee the repayment of borrowings with the least impact for the association.
The stadium executive committee is Paddy Wright, formerly chief operations manager with Smurfit's and currently chairman of the RTE Authority; Hugh Cawley, former general manager AIB; David Mackey, former county manager with the Cavan CC and director of the Quinn group; Sean McCague, president of the GAA; Liam Mulvihill, director general of the GAA. They will be joined by a stadium manager and financial controller who are to be appointed shortly.
Wexford's minor hurling manager, Larry Doyle, has been demoted by Bord na nOg to the status of selector, following his three-month ban from the Leinster women's football authorities. Current selector Matt Flynn has been appointed acting-manager until a successor to Doyle is appointed.
Two half-hour documentaries about the GAA and the state of the game in the US will be shown on TG4 over the next two Sundays at 9.25 p.m.
