Clontarf sees roles reversed

TWELVE MONTHS ago, such was Clontarf's all round strength that a meeting with Rush would have been deemed, by many, a "no contest". Things have changed dramatically in the interim, to such an extent that home advantage for today's Conqueror Cup first round tie probably gives Rush the edge in the betting stakes.

Clontarf's problem with emigration and unavailability has" made for some interesting team selections. Last week, the committee was forced into cajoling former keeper Gus Carroll up from the thirds, along with Des Duggan and Mario O'Kelly. Surprisingly enough, two wins were posted. Crucially, their two centurions in last year's final, Andre Botha and Deryck Vincent, are both available and they remain the biggest threat to Rush.

The emigration of Brian Gilmore and Anton Weir has left Malahide with a similar dilemma, but at least they can call upon Justin Benson for both this weekend's games. Benson's commitment to the Irish side has minimised his club appearances so far this season and so Malahide are fully justified in asking that he be released from the Leinster side that plays Munster in Cork tomorrow. Even with Benson, Malahide are slight underdogs for today's meeting with CYM.

Potentially the best of today's ties is at Rathmines, where Merrion last year's runnners up, take on Leinster, who are unbeaten in the league. This game serves as something of a dress rehearsal for Royal Liver Cup third round meeting between the same sides in Anglesea Road at the end of the month. The presence of both Ed and Gus Joyce for today's game strengthens the Merrion batting considerably, but, Leinster remain favourites.

Christo Ludick's recent arrival helps Phoenix's cause. They seek only their second win of the season at home to The Hills. Pembroke should be too strong for Carlisle in Kimmage.

There are two other first round ties Railway Union v Trinity at Park Avenue and Old Belvedere v North County at Cabra and you can take your pick in either case.
