Munster SFC: First round
Limerick v Cork, Kilmallock, 7.30
For a change this fixture has caused a bit of comment. It's Cork's first defence and Limerick's first attempt at integrating the under-21s into the senior team. All of which mightn't add up to a result much different to usual, but it will provide some useful pointers. Despite the sense of disappointment at losing to an accomplished Tyrone side, Limerick can take great encouragement from the under-21 run. The players will also be in better condition than many of the senior options so it does seem a chance worth taking for manager Liam Kearns. John Galvin has been an impressive centre-fielder and if Brian Begley's robust role at full forward is well known, Colm Hickey and Pat Ahern bring craft to the wide positions. Cork's rehabilitation of Steven O'Brien and Colin Corkery will be watched carefully by Larry Tompkins and selectors. If they go well, it doesn't prove the case beyond doubt, but if they go poorly it's hardly encouraging news. Cork were an efficient unit last year, if short of inspiration up front. The combination of known virtue should be too much for a young Limerick side.
