MAGNIFICENT AC Milan won their fourth Serie A title in five seasons yesterday, after they beat Florentina 3-1 before 80,000 delirious fans at the San Siro stadium.
Milan's usually stone-faced coach Fabio Capello burst into tears, players did laps of honour and club president Silvio Berlusconi grinned from ear to ear as the club celebrated the 15th league title in its history.
With a nine-point lead and two matches remaining, Milan can no longer be caught by Juventus, the defending champions and next month's European Cup finalists, who drew 2-2 at AS Roma.
Capello, who has received an offer from Real Madrid, will discuss his future with Berlusconi later this week.
Lazio skipper Beppe Signori scored the 100th league goal of his career - a 58th minute penalty, as they beat Atalanta 3-1 away. Roy Hodgson's Inter Milan were held to a goalless draw at Cagliari, while Sampdoria lost 1-0 at Napoli.
At the wrong end of the table, Torino and Cremonese will both join Padova in the Serie B next season.
Thousands of Dutch soccer fans flocked to Amsterdam's city centre yesterday in euphoric tribute to newly-crowned league champions Ajax.
Ajax scored a 5-1 victory against Willem II Tilburg before a 19,000 capacity crowd, winning the Dutch championship for the third time in a row and the 26th time in all.
Two familiar Ajax faces will be missing next season. Striker Edgar Davids and defender Michael Reiziger are joining Italian champions AC Milan on four-year contracts, the Dutch footballers' association said.
