Golf: Mark Calcavecchia broke a 46-year-old PGA Tour scoring record, winning the Phoenix Open yesterday with a 28-under-par total of 256, eight strokes better than Rocco Mediate.
Calcavecchia shot a final-round 67, to go with earlier rounds of 65, 60, and 64. It is the first win for Calcavecchia since the 1998 Honda Classic.
Tiger Woods tied for fifth place with Chris DiMarco on 271.
Golf: Powerscourt will stage the AIB Irish Seniors Open from May 11th-13th. This year's tournament boasts a record prize fund of £250,000, an increase of £30,000.
Badminton: A 4-1 victory over Estonia in their final ranking match gave Ireland an 11th place finish at the Helvetia Cup (the European B team championships) in the Czech Republic at the weekend. Saturday's 3-2 defeat by Austria ended the team's hopes of a top 10 placing - Ciaran Darcy and Claire Henderson won their singles' matches but Ireland lost all three doubles' ties.
Ten Pin Bowling: Peter Ahlen (Swe) bt Nick Frogatt in the final of the Irish Ten Pin Bowling championships at Stillorgan yesterday. Alan Bride (21) was an impressive fourth in the men's singles. England's Lisa John won the women's title.
