TWO GOAL Gorge Cadete eased Celtic into the third round of the Scottish League Cup last night.
But the premier side did not find it a completely enjoyable evening and had to withstand a number of frights against their second division opponents.
If Clyde's strikers had shown the lethal touch which their buildup deserved there was every chance that they could have created a real shock.
With only 30 seconds on the clock hesitancy in the Celtic defence allowed Miller Mathieson a clear sight of goal but only six yards out he hit a post.
Then midway through the second period his striking teammate Eddie Annand twice ran in on goal in a four minute spell but allowed goalkeeper Gordon Marshall to block both efforts.
Celtic punished those mistakes and in 12 minutes Cadete struck when the Clyde defender Steve McInulty failed to clear properly.
When the Dutch striker Pierre Van Hooydonk touched the ball to him the Portuguese player wasted no time in forcing it past goalkeeper Mark McLean.
Then, in 67 minutes, Cadete was again the striker who mattered when he bent low to head an Andreas Thom cross from the left into the net for a second.
The tiring second division side gave themselves hope when they opened their account in 74 minutes, after James Brown volleyed the ball back into the net after a corner was cleared. But Thom wrapped it all up three minutes from time with Celtic's third.
