BRITAIN'S athletics selectors sprang few surprises yesterday when they announced the bulk of their team for the Atlanta Olympics.

Two big names missing from the 72 strong squad were Jonathan Edwards and Steve Backley. But they have until the July 1st deadline to prove their fitness. Edwards, the world triple jump champion who pulled out with knee and heel problems, is due to compete again in Helsinki next week.

Backley, the European javelin champion, is recovering from an Achilles tendon injury. He has not thrown in competition this season and may seek a last minute place in Gateshead on June 30th.

Fast improving Scot Ian Mackie edged out former European junior champion Darren Campbell for the third 100 metre spot with Linford Christie and Darren Braithwaite.
