Judy Bell, an acknowledged pioneer for women in golf, breaks further, new ground by being named captain of the US men's squad for this year's Eisenhower Trophy. The biennial event will be staged at Sporting Club Berlin on August 31st to September 3rd.

A native of Wichita Kansas, Bell was the first woman to be elected to the executive committee of the US Golf Association in 1987. Nine years later, she became the first woman president of the USGA, which governs the game both at men's and women's levels in America and Mexico. The honour was conferred in 1996 which meant she officiated at the Curtis Cup matches at Killarney in June of that year, when Ita Butler led the home side to victory. Bell had earlier captained the US Curtis Cup teams of 1986 and 1988.

Jane Bastanchury Booth, a three-time Curtis Cup representative from 1970 to 1974, will captain the US team which defends the trophy at Ganton on June 24th. The eight-person line-up in which Carol Semple Thompson will be making a record 11th appearance, is: Beth Bauer, Thompson, Virginia Derby Grimes, Robin Weiss and new caps Leland Beckel, Hilary Homeyer, Stephanie Keever and Angela Standord. The alternates are: Jenna Daniels, Alissa Herron and Krissie Register.

Christy O'Connor Jnr earned $12,137 for a share of 22nd place behind Bruce Fleisher in the Royal Caribbean Classic at Crandon Park GC on Sunday.
