Dundalk 1 Cork City 2:DEFENSIVE ERRORS again cost Dundalk vital points as a late strike from Denis Behan snatched three points for Cork City at Oriel Park last night.
Seán Connor’s side were well in control when Chris Turner headed them in front in the 61st minute but a misunderstanding between Liam Burns and Chris Bennion allowed Billy Dennehy to steal in with an equaliser 10 minutes later.
The Cork City winger then turned provider to set Behan clear with the opportunity to slide the ball past Bennion with two minutes to go.
The home side dominated possession in the first half without ever really opening up Cork’s back four.
Despite failing to put a real move of note together, Paul Doolin’s side had the best opportunity of the first half.
Pat Sullivan delivered a harmless looking cross. Dundalk captain Thomas Heary could only divert the clearance to Joe Gamble on the edge of the area but with time to pick his spot he snatched at the chance and blazed over.
Dundalk pulled ahead just after the hour mark. George O’Callaghan’s terrific cross found the well-placed Turner and he brilliantly picked his spot with a fine header to claim his fourth goal of the season.
Cork equalised with 16 minutes to go. Ger Rowe could only divert the ball into Gamble’s path on the right. His lofted ball towards the box left Liam Burns and Bennion in limbo and Dennehy was allowed to toe poke home.
Dundalk were left fuming when Tiarnan Mulvenna had a penalty appeal turned down in the 81st minute and the home crowd was left stunned when Behan stole the points late on.
