SOCCER: Gary Beckett's last-minute goal gave Derry City a deserved victory over Cork City at the Brandywell last night.

It was Derry's second league win of the campaign and the result moved them to seventh place in the table - they were second from bottom before the kick-off.

Before Beckett struck for his first goal of the season, Derry failed to convert five clear-cut scoring chances, mainly due to the form of Cork's goalkeeper Michael Devine.

Devine was beaten prior to Beckett's winner, but Alan Bennett cleared off the line.

Derry seemed certain to rue those misses when the referee indicated in the 88th minute that he was allowing one minute of injury time.

But the ball immediately broke to Beckett 25 yards from Cork's goal.

The City striker controlled the ball with his right foot before hammering in an unstoppable left-foot drive into Devine's top right hand corner.
