FROM THE ARCHIVES:The daily "Court and Fashion" column in The Irish Times (later to become "Social and Personal") recorded the comings and goings of royalty and the aristocracy in the late Victorian era, as in these extracts from the column which appeared on this day in 1898. – JOE JOYCE

LORD PEMBROKE has been in Ireland on a visit to the Duke and Duchess of Abercorn at Baron’s Court, Tyrone, while Lady Pembroke has been in Switzerland with her sister, the Duchess of Leeds.

Lord and Lady Connemara, who rented Compton Verney, Lord Willoughby de Broke’s family seat in South Warwickshire, for some years, have taken Copse Hill, the late Mrs. Henry Brassey’s place in East Gloucestershire, for a term.

Lord Howth has arrived in London en route to Paris, whither his hunters have preceded him.

Mr. Balfour has left North Berwick and will be at Leeds for the Musical Festival. The Chief Secretary for Ireland and Lady Betty Balfour have left Whittinghame on a visit to Prebendary and Mrs. Gibson at the Vicarage, Leeds, where Lady Frederick Cavendish is included in the house party.

Lord Londonderry leaves Wynyard Park to-day for Willington quay, on the Tyne, to open the new Constitutional Club. In the evening he will be the principal speaker at a banquet, when he will be supported by the Sheriff of Northumberland and Mr. W. D. Cruddas. He will go on to Seaham Hall, near Sunderland, the same night to join Lady Londonderry, and both will be present next day at the annual sale of the Clydesdale horses and Shetland ponies at Seaham Harbour, returning to Wynyard Park the same evening. Sir Michael Hicks-Beach is expected at Wynyard next week.

The Duke and Duchess of Connaught are next week to be the guests of Lord and Lady Tweeddale at Yester House, Haddingtonshire, from Tuesday until Saturday, when the Duchess will proceed to Balmoral, and the Duke is to travel south to Bedale, on a visit to Lord Listowel at Thorpe-Perrow for a few days. There is excellent shooting at Thorpe-Perrow, which Lord Listowel has rented from Sir Poulett Milbank and the coverts are among the best in the North Riding. There will be a small party to meet the Duke, including Lord Breadalbane.

The marriage arranged between Thomas Adrian Greene, L.R.C.P. and S.I., Assistant Medical Officer, Ennis District Asylum, son of the late Thomas Greene, Esq., J.P., Green Lawn, Ennis, and Annie M., only surviving daughter of the late Daniel O’Brien, Esq., Rodeen House, Borrisokane, County Tipperary, will take place on the 26th instant.

The Right Rev. Dr. Archdall, D.D., Lord Bishop of Killaloe, Mrs. and the Misses Archdall, Miss Murphy, and suite, have returned to Clarisford House, Killaloe, after a long sojourn in Scotland.

Mr. Samuel Henry Little has left his residence, 59 Haddington road, for Rorkfield, Florencecourt, Co. Fermanagh.
