Sir, - The Society for the Prevention of Pollution of Language is seriously alarmed by the rapid spread of the habit of punctuating speech with frequent "Yennos". Those who have nothing better to do can usefully while away the time, armed with a stop watch and note pad, scoring the frequency this interpolation is used in radio interviews.
Some of the more ardent members of our society have even suggested that in order to stem the spread of this highly infectious virus, it may be necessary to slaughter all herds of individuals who score more than twenty "Yennos" in one minute's speech. - Yours, etc.,
SPPL (Howth branch),
Baily, Co Dublin.
