Madam, – I am writing about the article “Work permit system ‘leads to exploitation’ ” (Home News, April 14th). As a work- permit holder from the Philippines, I understand the problems people with work permits face. We are tied to our employers for our legal status and can’t freely change jobs.
I am not exploited by my employer, but I know many other domestic workers being mistreated, especially those who are live-ins, working long hours without proper days off for less than the minimum wage. Without the freedom to change employer they will not report abuse and risk becoming undocumented. Minister for Enterprise Batt O’Keeffe has the power to change this bad policy.
