Madam, – The new rules that apply to drivers receiving penalty points on both sides of the Border may run into difficulties down the road (“Border will no longer protect parking fine and toll evaders”, March 4th).

The speed limit in the North is 113km/h, while 120km/h is allowed in the Republic.

The penalty in the North for exceeding the speed limit is three penalty points and a £60 fine. The penalty in the Republic for exceeding the speed limit is two penalty points and an €80 fine which is increased to €120 and four penalty points if the case is allowed go to the courts.

In the North, failure to wear a seatbelt incurs a fine of €60, but no penalty points will be endorsed on your licence. A child from the third birthday up to 135cm in height (approx 4ft 5in), or 12th birthday (whichever they reach first) must wear the correct child restraint.

In the Republic, failure to comply with safety-belt requirements incurs a fine of €60 and two penalty points. Allow the case to go to the courts and the fine is increased to €90 while the penalty points are increased to four. Children aged three years or over who are under 150cm in height (approx 4ft 11in) and weigh less than 36kg (ie generally children up to 11/12 years old) must use the correct child seat or booster cushion when travelling in cars or goods vehicles.

Drivers would now be advised to carry a measuring tape, weighing scales as well as a copy of the Rules of the Road and Highway Code.
