Ways of wasting taxpayers' money

Sir, – Last Thursday I received a telephone call from Revenue.

Sir, – Last Thursday I received a telephone call from Revenue.

The caller told me I had unnecessarily attached their assessment document to my remittance and that it would be returned to me for inclusion in my records. I thanked the caller and joked about the pleasure of receiving a call from Revenue that didn’t result in one’s heart being put crossways!

This morning An Post delivered my one-page, A4 assessment document. To my astonishment, it was delivered in a large, heavy self-seal manilla envelope, which carried a postal charge of €1.50. The A4 document had my name and address positioned to be visible, when folded; in a regular window envelope, which costs €0.55 to post.

Factor in the cost difference between the two envelopes and it is clear that Revenue wasted €1.40 of taxpayers’ money in this instance. This is not acceptable. – Yours, etc,
