Sir - The photograph accompanying the article by Dick Grogan of April 9th encapsulates the Good, the Bad and the Ugly with regard to the current controversy over Waterford's quays. The Good is the river, the boats and the stretch of buildings on a small section of the quays, with the punctuation of the spire of Christ Church Cathedral behind.

The Bad is the sea of cars which obstruct the view of the buildings or the river, depending on your point of view, and the Ugly is the current planning application for a new bus station with its attendant bus parking, noise, fumes together with further applications for more car parking on the quays. The quays are already doing more than their fair share of catering for Waterford's parking problem, with almost continuous parking from one end of the quay to the other.

Let Waterford, and indeed Ireland, not miss the opportunity for a Millennium Project to create one of Ireland's truly spectacular riverside urban spaces, and return Waterford to the position of having "the finest quay in Europe." - Yours, etc.,
