Sir, - Regarding Grania Langrishe's problems in disposing of an old television (February 26th), I had much the same experience with a bed and mattress (charities do not accept such items). When I contacted the Corporation, I was informed that the so-called "annual" collection was the only means in place for disposing of furniture. However, this collection actually appears to occur every two to three years (or "every now and then", as I was informed by the Rathmines depot) and, as such, plays only an incidental role in the disposal of bulky items such as TVs, beds or fridges.I was also informed, in writing, that this type of disposal work is carried out by any number of private operators (with whom the Corporation has no intention of competing). While this is indeed the case, the cost is clearly a deterrent for many who would not be in a position to afford hiring a van (£35 was my experience) simply to remove an item of furniture.By opting out of the equation, the Corporation is ignoring a serious waste problem while at the same time devoting increasing resources to tackling the issue of litter. What a load of rubbish. - Yours, etc.,Paul Farrell, Clyde Lane, Dublin 4.
