VOTES FOR EMIGRANTS

Sir, - D.K. Henderson's letter (December 5th) is a downright insult to all Irish emigrants. To be referred as one leaving like rats off a sinking ship" is arrogance. To add insult to injury, you state that when the economy has improved, Irish emigrants "like rats are suddenly awakening to their Irish heritage".

Does this imply that when people emigrated during a poor economy (as in the 1980s) these same people were not aware of their own culture and heritage? I think not. Surely there cannot be a "degree of Irishness". You are either Irish, or you are not. - Yours. etc
