Sir, - Your Editorial of November 7th, "Travellers and Law", made an outrageous attack on Ms Olivia Mitchell, TD, for her "consistent opposition" to the establishment of halting sites.
For many years now The Irish Times has persistently and subjectively peddled a pro-Traveller agenda regularly alerting readers to perceived discrimination against that grouping, while rarely, if ever, broaching the subject of the lack of responsibility of that section of the population.
Many now feel it is time for a referendum to decide whether or not the Traveller/itinerant population should retain the extraordinary rights and privileges it currently enjoys or whether it should simply have the same rights - and, more importantly, responsibilities, as the rest of the population. - Yours, etc.,
P. McMahon, Northumberland Road, Dublin 4.
