Sir, - Jim Dunne's excellent article (July 13th) on illegal street sales highlights the problem of tobacco sales on Dublin's streets. Ash Ireland is also aware of illegal sales in housing estates and outside social welfare offices.
Over the last few years, the number of seizures of tobacco has increased due to the excellent work of the Gardai and Customs officers. However, despite all the detection work, some gangs continue to evade detection and everyone who purchases a packet of cigarettes on the street, at their front door or outside a social welfare office, is contributing to the continuation of this illegal practice. Yours, etc.,
Administrator,
ASH Ireland
