Sir, - I share Francis Moran's concerns about pedestrian crossings, (January 31st). In addition to the inadequate time factor, other intricacies impede the safe progress of walkers.
As my fingers pressed the button to activate the green signal so that I could traverse a busy city road, a street-wise Dubliner told me that my effort was wasted because the signals were automatically timed to expedite the traffic flow.
My informant disclosed an exception to that generalisation. He said that the push button on the pedestrian crossing near the Dail between Leinster House and the parliamentary offices in Kildare House does respond rapidly to facilitate our busy legislators. Maybe some of them would espouse the cause of pedestrians who encounter hazards when crossing busy roads. - Yours, etc.,
Tony Quinn, Dalkey, Co Dublin.
