Sir, – Last weekend during a return trip to Dublin I drove through the Dublin Port Tunnel for the first time. One of the first things I noticed was that all vehicle lay-bys in the tunnel have a sheer wall at a right angle to the direction of the traffic. This is the same design as the lay-by wall in the Swiss tunnel where last month a Belgian school bus impacted killing 28 people, 22 of whom were children.
Within a week of this accident the Swiss authorities installed safety barriers in the same tunnel to prevent vehicles from directly hitting such a sheer wall. I trust the National Roads Authority is working with the Dublin Port Tunnel operator to ensure that such additional safety measures are also implemented for the lay-bys in the port tunnel. – Yours, etc,
