Sir, – It is with astonishment that I read Vincent Browne’s (Opinion Analysis, January 2nd) article attempting to draw parallels between the actions of Gerry Adams as a senior commander of the Provisional IRA during the Troubles and those of Enda Kenny in implementing Government policy.
There is a profound and substantial logical gap between active participation in activities calculated to end the life of others for political purposes and political participation calculated to improve the quality and duration of life of others.
However much the author disagrees with the Taoiseach on how those objectives can be achieved, it is absurd and insulting to Mr Kenny to equate his motivation today to those of Mr Adams during the Troubles, as a key leadership figure within an organisation that attempted to achieve its political objectives precisely through the murder and mutilation of others. – Yours, etc,
